Drawer system Soft-close covers two families of hardware that close a drawer quietly on their own: complete metal drawer box systems with soft-close runners built into the sides, and concealed undermount slides with an integrated damper for wooden drawer boxes. Both are full-extension or 3/4-extension telescopic mechanisms that catch the drawer over the last 1-1/2 to 2 inches (40–50 mm) of travel and pull it shut without a bang. This category is the starting point for anyone building new drawers for a kitchen, bathroom or closet, or upgrading drawers that still slam.
How soft-close works
A soft-close drawer slide carries a small hydraulic or pneumatic damper and a spring-loaded catch at the back of the rail. When the drawer is pushed in, the catch grabs a pin on the drawer member, the spring takes over the last stretch of travel and the damper slows it down. The effect is similar to a door closer on an office door: the drawer never slams, the cabinet front is spared the impact and the contents stay in place. Because the catch also keeps the drawer closed, soft-close slides are self-closing as well – a drawer left open by 1/2 inch will finish closing by itself.
Two ways to build a soft-close drawer
Complete drawer box systems
The LOW system with 2-11/16 inch (68 mm) sides, the MEDIUM system with 5-9/16 inch (142 mm) sides and the HIGH system with 7-5/16 inch (185 mm) sides replace the wooden drawer box. The metal sides contain the runners, front brackets attach your own drawer front, and back connectors take a 5/8 inch (16 mm) board. You cut only the bottom and the back panel; the side height decides what the drawer is for – flatware and utensils in LOW, plates and small pans in MEDIUM, pots and bottles in HIGH.
Undermount slides for wooden drawers
If you build or keep a wooden drawer box, the soft-close undermount slides with full extension and the 3/4-extension version mount under the drawer bottom and stay invisible when the drawer is open. The drawer box sits on the slides and is held by locking clips at the front, so it can be lifted off for cleaning without tools. Undermount slides need a drawer bottom recessed by about 1/2 inch (13 mm) and a side clearance of roughly 3/16 inch (5 mm) per side; the exact values are given on each product page.
Full extension or 3/4 extension?
- Full extension (100 %) – the drawer travels completely out of the cabinet, so the back corner is as accessible as the front. Standard for kitchen base cabinets and deep pantry drawers.
- 3/4 extension (about 75 %) – the last quarter of the drawer stays inside the cabinet. Suitable for shallow drawers, desks and nightstands, and often chosen where a fully extended drawer would collide with a door or an appliance.
Sizing checklist before you order
- Measure the clear inner depth of the cabinet behind the front. The nominal slide length must be shorter than this depth; common nominal lengths run from 10 inch (250 mm) to 22 inch (550 mm) for kitchens, with 18–20 inch slides covering most 24 inch deep base cabinets.
- Check the side thickness of the cabinet (5/8 or 3/4 inch) and the inner width – drawer box width = inner width minus the clearance stated for the slide or system.
- Decide on the load: standard soft-close systems carry roughly 30–40 kg (65–90 lb) dynamic load per pair; for pot drawers and pull-out pantries choose heavy-duty drawer slides.
- Match the mounting pattern to the 32 mm (1-1/4 inch) hole system of the cabinet sides if the carcass is pre-drilled.
Related categories
All soft-close slides for wooden drawers, including side-mount ball-bearing versions, are listed under soft close drawer slides; concealed models are grouped in undermount drawer slides. For handle-free kitchens, push to open drawer slides use the opposite mechanism – a spring that pushes the drawer out – and cannot be combined with soft-close in one basic slide. The complete range of box systems is in drawer systems; slides by length are under 18 inch drawer slides, 20 inch drawer slides and 22 inch drawer slides. Drawers are finished with kitchen cabinet handles or a profile handle, and kept in order with pull-out storage baskets.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add soft-close to my existing drawers?
Yes. For wooden drawer boxes, swap the old slides for soft-close undermount or side-mount slides of the same nominal length; the drawer box usually needs only a recessed bottom for undermount models. For old metal-sided drawers, replacing the whole box with a drawer system set is the cleaner route.
Is soft-close the same as self-closing?
Every soft-close slide is also self-closing: the catch pulls the drawer shut from the last couple of inches. A plain self-closing slide, however, closes by spring force alone and may still bang. See the self-closing drawer slides category for that type.
Why does my soft-close drawer bounce back open?
Usually because the drawer is overloaded, the slides are not parallel, or the front is set too close to the cabinet and hits it before the damper engages. Check the alignment with the adjustment screws on the front brackets and reduce the load.
Which side height suits a 24 inch deep base cabinet?
Depth and height are independent: the depth decides the slide length (typically 20 inch), while the side height – 2-11/16, 5-9/16 or 7-5/16 inch – depends on what you store. A classic stack is one LOW drawer on top and two HIGH drawers below.
